Book Ontem vi

Lisboa

Unique piece commissioned by Felipa Almeida for the Amor é Cego (love is blind) exhibition at Livraria Lello in Porto, in homage to the novel Amor de Perdição by Camilo Castelo Branco.

Hunchback Society, the artist duo Madalena Parreira and Jorge Nesbitt, collaborate at every stage of the process, from modelling the clay to firing and glazing.

Part of a set of seven pieces, the Book evokes the time period of the novel, the convent, and the exchange of secret love letters between Teresa and Simão.
It was hand-sculpted in stoneware and glazed in a colour created by the artists to approximate the tone of 17th-century Italian maiolica plates.

The selected phrase 'Ontem vi as nossas estrelas, aquelas dos nossos segredos nas noites de ausência. Volvi à vida e tenho o coração cheio. Não morras filha da minha alma.' (Yesterday I saw our stars, those of our secrets in the nights of absence. I returned to life and my heart is full. Do not die, daughter of my soul.) was painted with high-fire enamel on unglazed clay, using the maiolica technique.
