Lia Raquel Marques is a designer and artist, holding a degree in Textile Design and a master’s in Design Products from the Royal College of Art.
Her work aims to create a material and descriptive language, representing material traditions and the narratives of artefacts. She began by referencing the basketry of Angola and its surrounding regions, exploring the relationship between the function of baskets and contemporary objects such as bowls and plastic utensils. The ceramic baskets explore the identity and use of traditional baskets while incorporating contemporary references to value and prosperity. The intention is to challenge the boundaries of the material through the use of patterns and dimensions.
She started working with ceramic baskets aware of the existence of verguinha but without using it as a direct reference. Since then, she has had the opportunity to learn more about the technique in Caldas da Rainha, always with the intention of maintaining her own visual language.
