Coleções 2 . António Carmelo Aires

The book Coleções #2 – António Carmelo Aires presents one of the most interesting private collections of Portuguese folk art today. Born in Redondo, Alentejo, Carmelo Aires began collecting at a young age, showing interest in various types of objects. However, it was the material culture of his homeland that captivated him most, leading him to assemble a remarkable collection of Redondo pottery, pastoral art and traditional kitchen utensils.

In this work, we present his collection from two perspectives: firstly, through a representative selection of pieces; secondly, by investigating the motivations behind its construction, as well as the research methods and acquisition of objects.

This volume is the second of a serie dedicated to private collections of Portuguese folk art. By focusing on private collections, the series offers the public an opportunity to discover pieces that are usually inaccessible, yet of great historical and aesthetic significance.
